Dear Winston Families, Colleagues and Friends,

As we begin the new school year, we would like to take the opportunity to share one aspect of how the Winston Innovation Lab (WIL) works to make a difference in the lives of each of our students. WIL seeks to directly inform classroom instruction and strengthen skills-based remediation by coordinating with campus leaders to support faculty in learning how to apply best practices and educational research. To achieve this end, WIL stays up to date on research pertaining to learning and learning disabilities and conducts its own longitudinal research that analyzes outcomes for WPS students. We then go one step further and translate these findings into applicable programming for our students, sharing this research not only with campus leaders and faculty, but also educators and professionals nationally and internationally.

WIL provides faculty across all campuses with thoughtful and strategically planned professional learning opportunities that aim to deepen understanding and equip teachers with proficiency in utilizing research-based remediation methods. WIL’s professional learning program includes opportunities for faculty members to engage with one another, collaborate and problem solve, while delving into the cognitive science of learning. WIL’s comprehensive program supports faculty with professional learning workshops such as:

Winston 101: Designed to build understanding of the Winston mission and philosophy, learning and learning disorders, as well as remediation methods, this series is offered to first year faculty.
Winston 102: A continuation of Winston 101, this series focuses more closely on the underlying processes of learning and how these cognitive processes are connected to research on remediation.
Research to Practice: For more seasoned faculty, case studies are presented, and discussions focus on the importance of linking understanding to evidence-based programming.
Council: In this series designed for veteran instructors, a case study is presented and the group collaborates to discuss complex facets of the student’s learning profile, deepening understanding and effective approach to remediation.
Updates in WIL Research Initiatives: WIL shares developments in new research with all campus Leadership Teams to further connect research to practice.
Teacher Excellence and Leadership Development: This graduate school-style course for nominated faculty members enhances acquisition of the knowledge essential to becoming an expert learning specialist at WPS.
WIL Faculty Learning Library: A virtual platform that provides asynchronous access to continued learning and evidence-based resources.
