Stay Engaged Over The Summer!

The Summer Program is an extension of the Winston Prep philosophy, principles, and model. It provides students with the unique opportunity to participate in the individually designed one-to-one Focus program aimed to enhance academic skills and foster independence. Students also have the option to add fun small group-size classes to further enhance their summer experience.

Who attends the program?

Students going into 4th through 12th grade from private, public, mainstream, and special education schools who would like to improve their academic skills in specific areas and remain academically engaged over the summer. 

Faculty

Summer Program teachers primarily consist of reading specialists, special education instructors, learning specialists, and speech and language pathologists from Winston Online’s full-time faculty. Regular communication with parents takes place throughout the summer and parents are updated weekly on goals and progress.

In the one-to-one Focus program, a customized academic program is created to match the specific needs of each student. The summer Focus program is designed to develop academic skills at each student’s appropriate level of need and interest. Developing students’ Qualities of a Sustainable and Independent Learner, such as resilience, self-advocacy, social responsibility, pragmatics, social communication, and problem-solving, are also infused into the one-to-one sessions.

  • Hands-on Lab Science

    Students will engage in a variety of live instructor-led hands-on lab experiments to develop their understanding of targeted scientific concepts and develop academic skills in the areas of predicting, critical thinking, executive function, and expressive language. Students will be asked to complete multi-step directions for each lab and engage in class discussions about each experiment and their result. There will also be a writing component incorporated into the class.
  • Media & Digital Literacy

    Media and digital literacy skills are critical skills in today’s world that are becoming more important than ever. Students will develop their ability to access, analyze, create, and use various forms of communication within the digital space. This hands-on experience will empower students to develop their digital literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. Lessons will be tailored to each student’s individual ability level and experience with Google Workspace, search engines,research, and credibility/bias identification. Through this process, students will strengthen their comprehension, problem-solving, and executive functioning skills.
  • Hands-on Math Class

    Students will strengthen basic math skills through direct instruction, review, and a variety of fun hands-on activities, including baking/cooking, art, travel planning, games, and more. Math concepts covered may include fractions and measurement, geometry and patterns, and data collection and graphing. An emphasis will be placed on skill-building and vocabulary development.
