Language Processing

Students with a core deficit in language processing are challenged with the concrete pieces of language and typically demonstrate strengths in comprehension and reasoning. Dyslexia, falling under the Language Processing umbrella, is a specific learning disability, neurological in origin characterized by persistent deficits in working memory, phonological processing, and rapid automatic naming. Students with dyslexia will often not only struggle with reading and spelling but also written expression, calculation, and following directions. Reading comprehension can also be impacted due to weak decoding skills. 

Sample Instructional Goals

  • Explicitly and systematically strengthen decoding skills 
    • Given pseudoword list, identify, code and read specific syllable types
    • Improve decoding skills and spelling of common and phonetically regular and irregular sounds 
    • Given a list of 10 sentences, each containing words with schwa vowel sounds, read the sentences aloud with increasing accuracy for target sounds
  • Explicitly and systematically strengthen encoding skills 
  • Explicitly and systematically strengthen reading fluency
  • Develop written expression skills at the sentence and composition levels.
  • Strengthen Resilience through the development and application of healthy and effective coping strategies when facing challenges 

Sample Approaches to Achieve Objectives
  • 5 days/week, 2 hrs/day of intense, explicit, multi-sensory, sequential decoding instruction and follow up and support throughout the day
  • Incorporate highly interactive remediation process between instructors and student
  • Continual assessment using miscue analysis and dictation to inform programming
  • Review and application of decoding/encoding skills implemented across all content areas
