September 2024

Dear Winston Families, Colleagues and Friends,

We are thrilled to reconnect with our community after summer break and to welcome those who have recently joined us. We are also excited to reintroduce you to the work of the Winston Innovation Lab (WIL), a fundamental pillar of the Winston Preparatory School. The Winston Innovation Lab is not a building where we come to meet, it is the work that is done in every classroom, Focus space and campus. This work focuses on understanding the science of learning and learning disorders and remaining on the cutting edge of evidence-based practices in student instruction and professional development. Through these efforts, we cultivate knowledge that allows us to support the growth and expertise of our exceptional faculty and bring the highest quality programming to students across the country.
The work that we do at WIL and throughout every corner of our eight campuses centers on a Continuous Feedback System (CFS) that reflects our philosophy and unique approach to educating students with learning disabilities and supporting them in becoming independent learners. The CFS prioritizes assessment not only as a starting point to deeply understanding each student, but also as an ongoing mechanism to continually analyze our students’ response to instruction, ensuring that we are most effectively designing remediation and support. We see assessment as the primary building block to our decisions about how to approach instruction with each individual student. The Winston Innovation Lab plays an integral role in researching and facilitating evidence-based assessment practices and sharing those practices with leaders and faculty on an ongoing basis. The CFS also emphasizes student self-assessment and reflection, leading to greater self-understanding, and ultimately, independence.

At the Innovation Lab, we look forward to another year of learning, sharing and supporting successful outcomes for all of our students. Please stay tuned for continued updates on our work.
