At the heart of what makes Winston Prep a most unique and effective program is our commitment to providing skills-based remediation that is tailored to meet the precise needs of each and every student. Rather than teaching to the “mean,” which reflects the process of teaching to the average skill level expected of the class, we design programming that directly targets each student’s learning profile, one that is profoundly understood through extensive and ongoing assessment using the Continuous Feedback System (CFS). For this reason, our students are grouped together not by age or grade, but by learning profile, allowing them to receive remediation that meets them where they are in both strengths and needs. While teaching to the mean involves implementing instruction that is designed to reach the most typical learner, teaching to the learning profile entails a much more nuanced and individualized approach that is skill-driven and goal-directed, ensuring that the specific and unique facets of each student’s learning needs are addressed and continuously monitored for progress.

We design programming for our students that reflects our understanding of their primary learning weaknesses and the underlying skill deficits that contribute to those weaknesses. Through each element of the WPS program, including skill-driven content classes, individualized Focus support, enrichment options and experiential learning, we provide opportunities for skill building that range from explicit instruction to real-life applications and hands-on learning experiences. Our overarching goal is for our students to not only work to remediate skills but also to help our students come to understand themselves as learners, facilitating their overall independence and wellbeing.

The Innovation Lab supports each of these efforts through its ongoing research, collaboration with faculty and leaders, and evidence-based program development.
